Staircase with a landing step
If you have a landing step on your staircase, here’s what to consider for the stair runner installation:
- Measure the Landing: Treat it like a wide step, measuring both width and depth for a perfect fit.
- Runner Placement:
- Extend the runner straight across, maintaining the same width. For plain colors, the runner can be woven as one piece. For stripes, it should be sewn during installation to align the pattern.
- Alternatively, install the carpet wall-to-wall.
- Fixing: Ensure the runner is tightly secured to avoid movement.
Discuss your preferences with the fitter for optimal results!
How to choose the width of your stair runner?
Choosing the width of a stair runner depends on the width of your staircase and the design you want:
-
Measure Stair Width: Typically, stair runners leave some of the stair edges visible. A good rule of thumb is to leave about 8-10 cm on each side, but this depends on your personal preference and the staircase’s total width.
-
If your staircase has a turn, measure the narrowest step and leave about 5 cm on each side. This is important because the widest step will have some exposed space, so the runner looks balanced across all steps.
-
Aesthetic Preference: Wider runners create a more luxurious look, while narrower ones highlight the staircase’s structure.
Adjust based on the staircase’s width and how much of the wood or material you want to show!
Can I use my own fitter?
Yes, you can use your own fitter to install a stair runner. Here are some key recommendations for a good installation:
-
Proper Measuring: Ensure accurate measurements, especially for stairs with turns. Measure the narrowest and widest steps to ensure the runner fits uniformly.
-
Underlay: Use a high-quality underlay to add cushioning and prevent the runner from slipping.
-
Secure Fixing: Use proper tools like staples, rods, or adhesive to securely attach the runner to avoid movement or wrinkles.
-
Alignment: Make sure the runner is centered and leaves equal space on both sides for a balanced look.
Clear communication with your fitter is essential!
How should I choose the color for my stair runner?
When choosing a stair runner, consider using a contrast color to make your staircase stand out. Here’s how to decide:
-
Contrast with Stair Material: If you have dark wood stairs, go for a light or neutral runner (beige, cream). For light stairs, bold or dark tones (navy, black) create a striking contrast.
-
Complement Your Space: Choose colors that match or contrast with your home’s palette. A bright runner can add vibrancy, while a muted one offers elegance.
-
Pattern or Plain: Patterns add character, while plain colors offer sophistication.
